review 1: As the remaining pages in this book became fewer and fewer, I became more and more dismayed. Now I have to wait for the third book to come out.The book is violence, this is about war after all, but I enjoyed this more than the first. I think the first struggled somewhat to establish a magic system, this second book was able to actually show it in action. I really enjoy the difference in abilities and the interaction between the Powder Mages and the Privileged. The story was good and the characters were compelling. Very much looking forward to the third book.I have to admit though, that the engineer in me wonders what is so special about "black powder" that a mage can control its explosions and energy. To me, black powder is not an "element" but a compound of sulfur, charco... moreal, and saltpeter. Why can a mage control the combination of these three? I don't know :/
review 2: Not quite as strong as the first but still a fantastic addition to the powder mage world. I like how Taniel and Tamas' roles basically switched in this book. Tamas is off fighting a losing battle with the odds stacked against him and Taniel is on the home front fighting traitors from within. Adamant is still being Adamant and doing his Sherlock Holmes bit and us readers are sitting back and enjoying every minute of it. There was a lot of character growth in this book as well as setting up for the 3rd book. This world excites me and I really like these characters. It is going to be fun to see what Taniel and Karpol do next. What is going to happen to Adipest and what is Tamas going to do about Lord Clairmont? (PS if youve actually read these books and I am mispelling names thats because I listen to them on audiobook and don't know how they are actually spelled). What role is Nyla going to play and is the kid ever going to be more than just a ward. I cant wait for the next one! less

PoB was an excellent story, CC is an excellent book. This is a small but vital distinction.
