review 1: Author Brian McClellan brought me back to why I cared about these novellas in his final installment of the Powder Mage novellas. In this, we follow Taniel, now an adult, through his first campaign. Tamas is present only in memories of conversations, but told in present tense, so you get the feel of him looking over his son's shoulder to guide him through this time.Taniel is not my favorite of the characters, but he is third, after Tamas and Erika, and this is still a fun and quick read for those in the Powder Mage universe.
review 2: The Face in the Window is set two years before the events in Promise of Blood and we get to see Taniel's first taste of actual combat and the the arrival of Ka-poel! :DThe Face in the Window provides a great insight into these two
... morecharacters as well as showing us some more of the extended family of Taniel and explaining more of Ka-poel origins! :DWe also get an a look at the the landscape that the war is being fought in which like the character is vividly described as well as seeing some hints of events that are further expanded in in Promise of Blood! :DThe characters are portrayed warts and all which gives many insights into them as well as providing a heap more backstory which sheds a lot of light on the events in Promise of Blood! :D The battle scenes and the way they change the characters involved are portrayed with a voracity that also runs throughout the story with an attention to detail that makes everything stand out! :DExcellent stuff expanding on much of the back story of Promise of Blood and setting up new things as well! :D Highly recommended! :D less

A good fun short read that gave us the beginning of Taniel's and Karpol's relationship.

Short and brutal but it is a good character study of Taniel.
