review 1: Apparently, this was part of the Ultimate line's first (I think?) big crossover event. I freely admit to having not one clue what was going on with the larger storyline here. But I think that's ok, and even works with the story as shown here. Because Peter doesn't exactly know what's going on, either. He's just busy saving people, or trying to. I wonder if me knowing what was going on (something about Magneto causing a tidal wave to hit Manhattan, I think) would have made me like this volume more or less.It was all going fine, in fact, right up until the last issue. Which is entirely silent. I'm not bothered by that. It may be a little gimmicky, sure, but I think it worked better here than it would have in many other books, at the hands of many other writers. The thing is.... more.. supposedly, Peter Parker dies at the end. And reading this now... Well, let's just say the dramatic impact and suspense of the moment is entirely lost. Was it meant to be permanent, or was it really the short term gimmick that it looks like now? I can't say, but I can't say that it doesn't impact how I receive the story.
review 2: This is a somewhat pointless volume of Ultimate Spider-Man.SPOILERS AHEAD SO BEWARE!!!At the end of this volume a giant wave hits New York and Spidey is taken down with it. This would be a great way to end the series except it doesn't end here. Spidey is revealed to have survived in the next part of the story collected in Ultimatum: Requiem. However, even if he had died here it would still be a lame ending because the last issue is the worst since the Wolverine body swap issue! It's completely silent which is a great idea for a series that is normally extremely wordy, but is done so so wrong in an issue that is supposed to end a series full of such great characters! It's an insult of an ending really and the only redeeming factor as an ending is that it really wasn't. Now, there are SOME redeeming qualities here. The wave destroying New York does have quite an impact and there is a great plot involving J. Jonah Jameson's character that begins here. However, mostly this issue is a HUGE missed opportunity. less

At first, I thought I must have missed something. Then I read all the other reviews. Yeah.

So much fun! And still manages to pack an emotional punch.
