review 1: With the film version being hugely praised it is good to see the comics series remain strong at the same time. This volume of Guardians of the Galaxy sees Peter Quill/Starlord facing up his royal father as the rest of the Guardians are sold to the various alien races of the Marvel cosmic universe. It begins with the Free Comic Book Day story, which both acts as an introduction to the characters and a way of introducing Venom to the team. It is a good introduction for new readers and I think that Venom really fits into the team well. The symbiote is alien of course and it makes sense to develop the character of Flash Thompson after his stint in Thunderbolts and his recent appearance in Superior Spider-Man. The main story is rather a good one and separating the team works su... morerprisingly well for a team-based book. The Starlord storyline is the main focus, finally giving us the big father/son confrontation that has been coming in the series for a while. The rest of the team are sold to alien races and have to use all their skills to try and survive. Also popping up to help out Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Drax and Venom are Angel of death Angela and Captain Marvel. Also included in this volume are the Guardians Annual, a decent story which focuses more on Captain Marvel, and some stories by the earlier Guardians writers (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) to celebrate the comic books 100th issue. Abnett's is particularly good and sets up the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3000 series. The artwork here is hit and miss. The problem is that there is no consistency, with different artists doing pages here and there and a general feeling of lack of cohesion on the art side of things. It would be great if they could use one artist and at least stick with them for the volume. All in all though an excellent volume which is the perfect jumping on point for fans of the film.
review 2: This would be a good jumping on point for a new reader. It's a good introduction to the core characters, while adding Venom to the mix. Not that there's much teamwork happening, because the group gets ambushed and separated almost immediately. For the most part, this works rather well. The separate perils they face suit each of them, and they handle themselves fairly well. My only thing is that they all get out too easily. There's a lot of "in the nick of time", a lot more than I would like. That said, I really liked the way that Peter handled his father. That was the highlight of the book. And the storyline teased in the annual at the end of the book is something that I think I would like to read. less
