review 1: I had read and loved this book dearly in high school, and it mostly holds up upon re-reading. A couple of the stories are a bit overwritten and Brian Wood too often substitutes musical taste for characterization, but Megan McKeenan is one of his finest characters and she holds down the center of this storm admirably. The book still succeeds in painting vivid pictures of its various locales. Ryan Kelly's brush work is so versatile; it has the precision necessary for the bustling city backgrounds, but he can loosen up to capture the emotion on Megan's face in broad, evocative strokes.
review 2: Beyond the story itself, which is still above-averagely good, this is an interesting comic because of what it has to say about the process of making a comic book. It was ... moreoriginally conceived as consisting of entirely stand-alone issues, with a single female character, who eventually became Megan, providing a minor connecting thread. Over time, watching Megan developed over the course of the 12 years covered by the series became the main focus. Each issue is followed by one of the more informative essays for a comic book that I have read, which shows how the Local developed over time. Through these, the reader gets an interesting insight into the process of writing Local.Local has a lot of other features to recommend it. Megan stands out as being very realistic. The stories in each volume vary enough that it is unlikely that all readers will like all of them, but I wouldn't consider any of them as bad. The art is fantastic, with the style changing subtly to fit each issue. less
