review 1: This was a very awkward book to read. There were a lot of weird things which were not explained until the very end of the book, but they were really, really obvious. Several times, the narrator explains things that should just not be explained. For example, at one point, the main character hits someone and he says, "Whoa, Rocky Balboa." Then she proceeds to explain that the guy was making fun of her for acting like a boxer. :S Not really necessary. There were quite a few bits like this throughout. Hailey is a strange, very stupid, rather boring girl who repeatedly does things that go against the nature of a teenage girl. "Oh, I saw blood and evidence of murder, and it's mysteriously gone, but my mom is laughing, so I guess it's all fine. Let's go eat!" She goes camping wit... moreh her parents and sees and hears creepy things in the woods, but insists on wandering off every few minutes. The fact that three boys have recently gone missing comes up several times, yet no one seems to be terribly worried. Hailey's mother acts weird, fiercely protective of her daughter, but both Hailey and her father keep saying she's overprotective . . . except she's not because Hailey really is clumsy and stupid! Right after she has to go get patched up from stumbling into a bear trap (???), she's ticked at her mom for worrying about her. The overall concept was ok, though I don't really dig the harpie/siren storyline. Hailey meets a cute guy (who punches someone else who makes a smart remark at her, a very good sign that you don't want him around) and follows him all over, discovers that he and his friends are not what they seem and is transformed into a monster. Abrupt end of Part 1. Part 2 starts in a very confused manner, with Hailey waking up in a bathtub full of blood (which was never explained) and it just gets weirder from there.I'm afraid it was tough to get through this book. Maybe if you really like sirens and stuff, it would be worth the slog.
review 2: Could not finish, stopped at 5 chapters in. This is one of the worst things I've read in my life. It is poorly written, very passive tense although since it's written from a 18 year old girl's POV, I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. It reads like a diary. The characters are completely unbelievable. The main character needs anti-anxiety medication, her parents are idiots, she makes poor decisions and everyone in the book acts completely odd. If I could, I would give this half a star. less
