review 1: Bryant Terry's books demonstrate that a life of pleasure can be entirely consistent with living a life committed to social justice. Terry's recipes are fantastic. He makes delicious food. But what I love even more than his great culinary gift is his commitment to grounding and orienting his food in the rich traditions of the African Diaspora. Terry is working for food justice within a community that is underserved in terms of access to healthy foods and medical care. He presents his food as a means of community self-empowerment and a celebration of the arts and culture of the Black diaspora. I love this book. And I am grateful that there's a Bryant Terry out there in the world.
review 2: Yes!Finally, vegan food that isn't bland or reliant on tofu. I cook with a
... more lot of spices and need my food to be spicy, zesty, and/or tangy: Terry totally gets this. The recipes are all mouthwatering. I mean, he even has a section for spice blends and hot sauces! Be still, my beating heart.Plus, like I mentioned, it's so refreshing to see vegan recipes that aren't all about tofu. There are so many vegetable alternatives you can go through before you need tofu. Terry introduces grains, vegetables, legumes, and even fruits as the center of his meals, and only adds tofu when it makes a lot of sense, like on kabobs. So I appreciate how innovative his recipes are, though in a way, they're incredibly traditional: after all, it's all based on African cuisine, one way or another. Talk about classic. There were a lot of my favorite foods in here - North African tagines, teas, and spices especially - but there were many ingredients and recipes I'd never heard of. I remember my dad once cooked a traditional Angolan meal for us, and I was so fascinated by how unfamiliar it was to me. I think that was the first time I had okra, actually. So I'm excited to explore this new cuisine and step way out of my comfort zone. Time to buy some teff! less
