review 1: A vodnik is a mythical water creature (resembling a human) that drowns people and traps their soul in a teacup (very sturdy teacups).I really liked reading a fantasy that was set in a different country with customs and legends I know nothing about, yet still portrayed in a way I could understand. I also liked how honest the main character was, and how he wanted to and was eventually able to tell his family about the crazy things going on around him; another interesting thing: most of them believed him pretty easily! In most books like this the main character ends up sneaking around their parents secretly the entire book, but in this one I loved when his parents (his awesome librarian dad especially) got involved in helping him.I look forward to reading the next in the ser... moreies (which I hope there will be!)
review 2: I started the book worried that it was falling into some teen-lit cliches. But, next thing I knew, I was so swept up into the story that I couldn't put it down. I loved the world he set up and really enjoyed this introduction to Slovakian fairy tales. I actually picked it up just because I knew nothing about those tales. Another plus for me was that it wasn't a series. The author certainly set up that as a possibility, but it works great on its own. A very fun read! less
