review 1: Widger captures those hard-to-portray, delicate uncomfortable places in families. Through three storylines, we get to know the pain of motherhood, of being a daughter, of parental expectations and family you don't choose-- all against the violently unpredictable backdrop of Hollywood. The characters are fully realized and as funny as they are flawed. The storylines merge and rush straight through to an ending which is both surprising and satisfying.
review 2: The book lost some of the soul in its lack of adverbs and very complete use of detail. The reader needs little imagination because the author so heavily detailed the Hollywood wannabees and the geographical locations. The characters were mostly distasteful. ... morey.On the other hand, this was an interesting and unique read that held my attention. It is interesting that the distasteful characters who did not inspire sympathy with their bad choices and bad morals still held my attention. I still found the book interesting and I am puzzling why in the face of the negative vibes. I did enjoy the book. Maybe I just succumbed to the manipulation of a formula? less
