review 1: I liked this book, but not as much as I expected to. I've had it for quite awhile and just now got around to reading it. There is a solid "who done it" plot - with no surprises at all when the bad guys are revealed. In any case the book focuses more on Canin and Kasey's relationship. They have worked together seven years and have mutual respect and attraction which doesn't go anywhere because of a terrible trauma in Kasey's past. I admit feeling guilty for saying this, but I lost patience with Kasey. I've never - thank goodness - experienced what she did, so I have absolutely no basis on which to make such a judgement. By the end it occurred to me that she was more traumatized by the way she had learned to cope with the trauma than the trauma itself. Then I was able to under... morestand a little bit better. It is interesting how we can build walls to protect ourselves from something, then build another set to protect the original walls. If this makes any sense. Ultimately I realized that I lost patience for Kasey, because I recognize her in myself and that is never easy. She has become both incredibly strong and incredibly fragile at the same time. Like a good piece of china that doesn't break easily until hit in just the right way. This book was erotic and does have BDSM scenes inside of a sex club as part of the undercover aspect of the story. The relationship is woven through these experiences in the club and I really liked the conclusion that Kasey and Canin came to about their sexual needs and desires. Unfortunately, I found myself skimming over the erotic scenes which happens sometimes. I'm never sure if I'm just "not in the mood" or the scenes just aren't all that engaging as written. As I had no headache while reading, I tend to think it may be the second issue. ;^)Well, looking back this is a great review where I didn't give any spoilers but also didn't give a potential reader very much information to go on either. I do recommend this book to people who like a little bit of suspense peppered into their erotic romances. The writing is solid, as Cameron Dane is yet another writer I can rely on for quality.
review 2: This is the first time I have ever rated Cameron Dane under 4 stars. Her books are like crack for me usually, I just can't get enough and I need more to fuel my addiction. Not so with the 'Ultimate Kink', but it's bound to happen. You can't please every time and most of Ms Dane's books please me greatly. Canin is an OK character, Rhone's brother (Finding Home) and partner in Quinn Security. This guy growls a lot. Apparently he has different growls that Kasey, the other main character here, can distinguish between. I didn't mind him, he had some nice moments trying to help win Kasey's trust but, whilst I really wanted to, I just couldn't completely get into his character.Kasey is also a partner (now) in Quinn Security and both she and Canin are going undercover at Vixen, a local sex club, to help detect who is violating members using the TWL room there. Kasey was hard for me to like, I just didn't particulary care enough to relate to her character. I know I should have empathised with her because of her very rough past....but I couldn't.Two things that were missing for me were the great connection I usually feel for Cameron Dane's characters and the smoking sex. I felt a disconnect with the MC's and that the sex was not up to the usual Cameron Dane standard. Everything just felt forced here. The flame was missing, it was more of a little spark. While I'm not against a woman donning a strap-on and doing a guy anally, it didn't work for me. It was a different sex scene than most though, so kudos to Cameron Dane for doing something a little different. The suspense was well handled and that was a strong part of the book, as well as a snap shot of Rhone and Adam and their well intended meddling ways. I'm looking forward to 'Saying I Do' and, in particular, 'Breaking Logan's Laws', as both Logan and Nate were briefly introduced here and I think they will be very interesting. less
