review 1: When a close friend of Cindy Chang’s died unexpectedly, it served as a reminder to remember what’s important in life. She thought of what she wanted to do with her life, the kind of person she wanted to become, and to love well. As Chang’s priorities changed, she was moved to ask others what their hopes and dreams were. What started as “Before I Die…” being painted on an abandoned building with chalk paint, had grown to hundreds of these public and anonymous walls in over thirty countries. This book is a tribute to the success of these installations and the touching, funny, and optimistic words which collectively can “nourish our well-being and help us see that we’re not alone”.I saw one of these chalkboard walls on the lawn of the state capital building i... moren Denver. I was so impressed with the concept and content of what passersby had written, that I took photos of it. It was so jam packed with writing, that I didn’t add my own thoughts. I walked away feeling elated.
review 2: I loved this big, pretty book by artist/educator/TED fellow, and most importantly, friend Candy Chang. Reading through the nearly 300 wonderful pages, one is instantly transported to each part of the globe that spotlights the Before I Die... wall project. There are quirky facts and interesting stats about each city, marvelous photos, and emotional personal stories peppered among the brilliantly laid out book. More than a few "wishes" people had written on the walls in their home cities moved me nearly to tears, and that's a feat for sure, given that my heart is truly a dry, wretched, bitter wasteland (ha!). I read (and looked at) Candy's book while concurrently reading fiction by Roberto Bolano, and it served as a nice counterpoint to the weird world Bolano constructs. 4.5 stars. less
