review 1: I really enjoyed this follow-up to Spellbound! Emma still makes me crack up with some of the things she says, as do the rest of them! I love how close her and Brendan are and how they make each other stronger and better people. They have their problems and disagreements but they get through them and come out the other side stronger then before.I like that a couple of people have been let in on their secret (well except for the reincarnated soul mates thing!) and I like who those people are, Cisco and Ashley. I also like that Angeligue and Brendan are starting to get along a little better and find some common ground which is good for Emma. I mean they still snark at each other and they aren't quite friends yet but I think they are more accepting and tolerant of the other no... morew. They know each other a little more and no longer hate each other, though to be honest the problem has always been mostly on Angelique's side as she was the judgemental snobbish one not Brendan! She was lumping him in with the rest of Vince A and not giving him a chance, he honestly didn't care about what money her family had, where she lived or what she was as he's not like that, but she was determined to label him as a judgemental rich boy! In this book, she learns she's been wrong about him and I think he earns her respect even if they do still snipe at each other!I really hope that we get another book! I want them to have their HEA but I don't want to say goodbye to them just yet! It would be great if the books could at least extend to a trilogy, if not more! After all, with all the past lives they've had, I'm sure a few more stories in Hadrian's could apply to their past lives and come back to haunt them! Plus, I'd kinda like to see a story line that involves Emma meeting her dad and learning why he left them when they were younger, maybe see if he definetly is where she gets her powers, if he's a witch too?
review 2: Spellcaster was the sequel to the sweet contemporary fairytale Spellbound and it was a tough act to follow.Spellbound was like an old-fashioned tale that had been extended and transplanted into contemporary times. It held magic, a curse, love and danger and it was the perfect read for a overgrown child, such as myself, looking for an inked disney fairytale upgraded to our reality and with a dash more suspense.Following in Spellbound's footsteps, I was very glad to be reacquainted with the romance and tenderness shared by Emma and Brendan, and to see how their relationship grew and evolved as time passed and new obstacles presented themselves. In this respect there was an obvious change from Spellbound and development in the relationship of the characters to each other and to the world surrounding them. However in all truthfulness I cannot say I felt quite the same about the remainder of the storyline and the characters themselves as individuals. As a sequel I didn't feel it added much to either. I was eager to read Spellcaster as I very much enjoyed Spellbound and was expecting a new tale full of adventure, magic and love that would bring further growth and understanding to the characters. Unfortunately I did not see much of this. I will admit though that this could very well be due to the fact that I enjoyed Spellbound so much as it was that, I didn't really feel like anything needed further development. That said I did enjoy how Emma tested and gained confidence in her new found magical talents and witchy side leading to the more complete acceptance of who she is, what her gifts mean and, more importantly, the responsibility they entail.Despite this Cara Lynn Shultz's narrative style and pacing did not change or falter from her previous work and I enjoyed how it calmly but steadily took me through Emma and Brendan's new adventure. She is yet another author who's work I shall continue to follow.Overall Spellcaster was perhaps not necessarily a required sequel to complete Emma and Brendan's story, but it was a nice read all the same. And being the soppy saddo romantic that I am I will, blushingly, admit that I was very happy to catch a few more tenderly sweet moments and some slightly more sizzling ones :p less
