review 1: This is the second book in the Birthmarked trilogy. Gaia Stone has thus escaped the Enclave and found her way to the wastelands with her baby sister. She miscalculates the distance and they almost died of starvation. She is rescued by Peter who takes her into a new settlement, Sylum. They have new rules she is unacquainted with and begins on the wrong foot from the start. This book was a little more frustrating because of the love triangles and strong leadership. I kept finding myself thinking, what kind of rule is that? What a backwards way of thinking! But I suppose this author intended it to be so absurd that you connected with the book through frustrations. Great trilogy thus far I would surely recommend this book. Not just to young adult readers though, although it wa... mores geared toward them as an audience I think adults would enjoy this as well. It has mature themes and action!
review 2: A gripping story. I had a little trouble keeping all the men straight. I enjoyed reading it. A cool think about this trilogy (I'm halfway through the third book) is that it shows three or more (depending on how you're counting) ways of dealing with a cataclysm. Most post-disaster books only show one.Reading a few other reviews, I am surprised to see how many people approach this trilogy from a perspective of "Is it pro-life? (where 'pro-life'=denying pregnant people access to abortion" I did wonder about the author's intent on that question as I was reading, but it's far from the only issue in the book, and I don't think the book comes down clearly on one side or the other. less
