review 1: Interesting but only ok. Random pick in the library. Just picked off the shelf without reading the jacket or anything. It was pretty decent considering. No real plot. Set in the 30's. Life on Long Island. Boy and older sister live with Grandpa and Aunt and Uncle after mother's death. Life changes, hardships arise, death and growing up. Not a depressing book and also not a feel good book. It was interesting and just ok as I've already stated. Forgettable.
review 2: I won this book on First Reads, so thanks! As for my review, 2 thumbs up. Her writing evoked strong images of wherever, whatever, and whoever the author was describing. It's just filled to the brim w/ beautiful imagery; you could taste the salt air, hear the surf. I started reading this at the beach,
... morewhich brought the ocean theme to life, but even after leaving the beach, the imagery was fantastic. The overall tone of this book is a little melancholy, which isn't always a bad thing. There's not a ton of conversation in this book, so don't read it if you're looking for a action-packed, conversation-filled read. It's not slow by any means, she does a great job of moving the story line along, but it's very pensive and emotional. The summaries about this book kind of give you the wrong idea about the story. The fireworks factory explosion happens right off the bat and is a minor detail in the whole book. It's a kicking off point for the story, but not integral to it. The cover is part of the whole misleading-about-the-fireworks thing, too. At first I expected it to tie into something, but it's more an abstract connection than a direct, concrete connection. All in all, a good book that I recommend if you're looking for a thoughtful, slightly melancholy book. less
