review 1: Marian's Christmas Wish is a fun regency romp, where you must suspend belief and not judge it with 21 century values. Marian is only 16, but wise beyond her years. Gil is a perfect foil as a tender hearted hero, with baggage. If you are reading for realism, this is not the book for you. If you are reading for Carla Kelly's humor, romance, and engaging characters, then read this book and enjoy it. Carla Kelly's characters are fun, unpredictable, and never the same. Each has their own endearing quirks that make her books stand out from the forest of cardboard cutouts. Even her secondary characters from stage coach drivers to servants make her books enjoyable. I never tire of her insights or interesting plot twists. Perfect pastime for a boring, rain soaked Sunday after... morenoon!
review 2: I really enjoyed this Carla Kelly. After reading several of her LDS and Regency books, you start to see a little formula, but this one really didn't seem as formulaic to me. The characters seemed more interesting and genuine. I was pleasantly surprised. When I first started reading, some of the characters seemed a bit flat, but Kelly does a great job of reversing the stereotypes of some of the characters without making it ridiculous or unbelievable. I think it was artfully done. I liked the romance and characterization and like most of Kelly's works, it isn't anything I would be embarrassed to read out loud to anyone. I would actually love to see a sequel to this one. I am a Janeite and it is fun for me to explore her period through Kelly's works. less
