review 1: This was a great read. What I love about Carla Kelly is that she writes about the time period more realistically without being "too much" and as a result the stories are interesting and compelling. Her characters are interesting and compelling as well because they're 'average' people (captains, surgeons, etc.).Though the description of this book references the "ugly duckling" theme, I this it's only a minor piece of the story. Without giving anything away, the majority of the book is about Hugh and Polly's experience though Portugal and it was gripping! The human experience she depicts was captivating. I think the only thing I would perhaps have liked in an epilogue was the reunion of the sisters.

... morealf-sister and her husband. hugh is on board the ship to do a survey of how the rest of the navy thinks things could be done better. polly and hugh get to know one another on board ship, but hugh thinks that he is too old for polly, and sails away when the ship leaves port. when he returns, he finds that polly is traveling inland to a part of the country that isn't safe. when hugh insists on going on one of the trips, they are attacked by french soldiers and taken prisoner. as they travel with the soldiers to meet up with the commanding officer, hugh and polly come to realize that the age difference between them doesn't mean anything.what i liked: hugh and polly. they were both so down to earth and, once they were kidnapped, there for each other. i liked the descriptions of the war, and how it affected all sides. i also liked that hugh and polly managed to gain the trust of their attackers.what i didn't like: the indicision both of them felt in the beginning with regards to their ages. less

Story gets 4 stars very cute but R rated because of intimate details. Not for young girls.
