review 1: This is an excellent follow up to "Marrying the Captain." Nana and Oliver appear in this story but as a backdrop to Lady Laura Taunton (Nana's half-sister) and Philemon Brittle, a Royal Navy surgeon. Lady Taunton has been widowed for a year when she works up the courage to read Nana's letter inviting her to visit. Laura and Nana know each other from Miss Pym's school in Bath but never knew they were both Lord Ratliffe's by-blows. They also have another half-sister, Polly Brandon, who has decided to stay at Miss Pym's Academy for now despite Nana inviting her to live with her and Oliver in Torquay. Philemon and Laura's love for each other develops despite the hectic pace at Stonehouse, a Royal Naval hospital between Plymouth and Devonport. The author does not gloss over the... more realities of war but she treats the subject in a matter-of-fact way that doesn't leave the reader unduly disturbed, unless you're really squeamish. This story also continues after Philemon and Laura are married and struggle through Laura's trauma from her first marriage to the late Lord Taunton who basically just used her body to try and sire an heir without any concern for Laura. Philemon shows himself to be a patient and understanding man in this regard. Once the psychological hurdles are overcome then things proceed nicely. There are deep issues dealt with and overcome by all the characters involved. The ending comes unexpectedly but it's a nice, quiet way to end the story setting things up nicely for the final part of this trilogy involving Polly Brandon. I look forward to continuing the story of the three half-sisters who, despite their sorry excuse of a father, have found each other and triumphed with their quiet dignity and inner-strength. This is 4-1/2 to 5 stars.
review 2: This story has the sensual heat of a Barbara Cartland novel (barely there) but what it does have is strong character development and a sweet, satisfying plot. I don't think I've ever read a tale detailing such a vivid medical viewpoint and the deep sacrifices the military men and their families were forced to make. I was fascinated, but I missed the physical romance. Even so, The Surgeon's Lady is worth reading, but I give it only 3.2 stars because I prefer that physical love is balanced with an otherwise strong romance. less
