review 1: I really enjoyed this one. Characters that were mysterious--good guy? bad guy? a little of both? I loved the protagonist--smart, funny, with a deep dark secret, and tended to get the crap beat out of him! I also appreciated the world building--I was thinking French monarchy with magic thrown in. I also liked the magic vs science thread throughout. And while one storyline was basically tied up, there are many more left to be explored. Will definitely be ordering the next book.
review 2: This medieval fantasy book is about a failed magician now librarian who is tasked by a distant royal cousin to solve a crime/conspiracy. He is assisted by a court fop and a wild mage. This is mostly a mystery as the trio goes undercover to discover the truth. The author
... moredid a good job at keeping me guessing as to the culprits. I liked the mystery part of all this but I did not like the conclusion at all. I felt like I missed something because I did not understand certain plots and motivations. Like maybe there are others behind the scenes pulling the strings. This is the first book of a trilogy so maybe more is explained later? I do not feel like continuing though. less

A little slow moving at times, but interesting nonetheless.
