review 1: The second book in Carol Berg's Collegia Magica series, I enjoyed it. I again liked the environment where "real" science vies with magical science for superiority, and I liked how the tale was now told in a different first person voice, this time that of Anne, the daughter of the renegade exposed in the first book. Now the conspirators who remain from the first book are circling the Queen; we're just not sure who the conspirators are, nor exactly what they plan. But Dante, the magician from the first book, is certainly to be treated with suspicion. The story begins with Anne being summoned to the Royal seat, where she will be a minor Lady-in-Waiting to the Queen, and be married off to some low-level lord, a soul-destroying future. But the death of her sister, a novice magi... morecian, has made her look more deeply at events, and she now searches for truths, initially without friends, but gradually with allies as the book progresses. As I said, I liked the book; I just somehow found it hard to not put it down. (yes, the opposite of an un-put-down-able book). I'm not sure why that was - the story was good and the characters well-drawn, but I just found myself less than riveted. That being said, it was still very good, and I will look forward to the third installment.
review 2: I'm enjoying this series immensely. Carol Berg has a great talent for creating intense, complex characters. The world and the afterlife she's created here is fascinating. Looking forward to reading book three soon, to find out what's going on with the souls of the dead.P.S. Not, despite the covers, one of those romances trying to masquerade as fantasy. This is serious fantasy, not window-dressing. less
