review 1: I received this book in a giveaway. I opened the package the day it was delivered, it was really very exciting. The best part was my intentions were to just check it over, read the synopsis on the back cover, maybe the prologue, but to my utter surprise, I found myself immediately engrossed and from that moment, everything going on within my household was gone, I was transported in time to the year of our Lord 1065 and my family suddenly had to fend for themselves, cooking, laundry.....whatever. Nothing could tear me away from this book. Carol McGrath's style of writing took hold, drew me in, and refused to release me until the last page, the last word, and it ended too soon for me. This author packed in an enormous amount of information, but with grace and clarity. I coul... mored actually see, smell, and hear the events as they occurred. I loved this book.....so much. It is one of those (in my humble opinion) that stays with you long after you've finished it. Of course it's the first of a trilogy......crap! In a good way, truly! This definitely is a book I will keep, covet, and possibly lend to a friend, with dire threats if they don't return it.
review 2: I thought this was an interesting and well researched book, full of historical facts and snippets. My sole knowledge of 1066 was that William (the Conqueror) invaded England, leading to an upheaval in society, so this book certainly fleshed out the events for me. By the three-quarter mark my attention was beginning to wander, however: I found the book most interesting when it dealt with the run-up to the Battle of Hastings, rather than the aftermath. less

This was a great read, but Elizabeth Chadwick has thoroughly spoiled me.
