review 1: This is not a book you can say you enjoyed. The subject matter is too horrific, though the author has the class to keep the horror to the psychological (which is bad enough) and keep references to the actual torture of a child to a minimum and then mainly to witness reaction rather than graphic description. One little tangent I found interesting is that the author is the daughter of one of the men who created the Cybermen. When it comes to anything but each other, Brendan and Sherilyn are Cybermen without the cyber. You can picture a Cyberman reacting to Samantha's death in the same way they do. The author does her best to explain HOW Brendan and Sherilyn became the sociopaths they are without it falling into excuses. These people were not born evil, the way the press like... mores to demonise people in these kinds of cases in Real Life. But she also doesn't make excuses for them. Nothing and no one but themselves made them commit this awful crime. She also shows that Samantha is not the only victim in these cases. A recent Panorama showed the impact the Baby P case had on members of Social Services. Topolski preempted that in this book. A difficult but compelling read. Probably not one I'd recommend to any of my friends who've recently become parents.
review 2: I was very disappointed in this book. I was so excited to read it because the description sounded very gripping, but was sorely let down. Although I didn't mind the style of being written from the perspectives of different characters, some were unnecessary and took away from the story. The discussion of the trial did not last long enough, nor did it give any jaw-dropping details. The crime itself was just glossed over and altogether forgotten by the time the trial was over. My favorite part was, when discussing their lawsuit, we get a glimpse into just how warped Brendan and Sherilyn's thinking is. There is also the brief description of their treatment of Samantha. While gruesome and hard to read, it sets the stage for the outrage you are supposed to feel with this book. I wish the entire book had been like these two parts. It would have made a much more interesting read.A lot as been made about the telepathic connection between Sherilyn and Brendan. While it was hokey, I liked it. Not a fan of the end, either. Too clean, sudden and anticlimactic. less
