review 1: Now I have a wonderful dilemma - I gave De Robertis powerful first novel 5 stars, but her second book is even better!Powerfully written, with beautiful lyrical language, this is the tale of one young girl's life in the time of The Disappeared in Argentina. I was so drawn into Perla's story that I didn't even see the twists coming.I can't wait for Di Robertis third novel (due next year) & she is one of my new favourite authors!Best fiction I have read this year!
review 2: What a difficult book to read. Horrible, in fact. Not my kind of book. Yet I wanted to keep going. I did decide to avoid reading it at bedtime. This is not my kind of book. I read it because my book group will soon be discussing it. I predict that this will be a dynamic discussion. Although ... morethis is fiction, I am quite sure that the history is accurate. What happened in Argentina, not all that long ago, appalled me. This was new information for me. I will be doing some research into that subject. I had just come off reading "Wild Swans" a non-fiction book about the horrors that occured in China during the Mao years and before. These two books gave me a bit too much reading about the extreme human capacity to commit atrocities (understatement) on other humans. We read about extreme hate and strong love, with some sex that was well described (understatement). De Robertis' way with words was very effective in portraying the wide range of emotions. Her long, long sentences, stream of consciousness style, pack a mighty punch. She is a word master. If this was a translation, which I think is the case, it was a masterful translation. Light reading is on deck for me now. less
