review 1: When I started this book, I didn't really think I had a problem with always aiming too high when I made resolutions- because I feel like that's what most people do. We say on New Year's Eve that we will Start Exercising or Start Eating Healthy and try to transform our entire life from one day to the next. And while maybe it does work out for a lucky and determined few, for most of us we end up just feeling guilty when it doesn't. What this author recommends is another approach entirely- to resolve to change just one tiny specific habit at a time, until we have a new habit, a new normal.I especially loved the chapters on the different categories in which one might want to make a "microresolution" like organizing, spending, eating healthy, and exercise. She provides plenty o... moref examples, many of which I'd like to try out. I feel like this is a much more manageable method of self-improvement than trying to change everything all at once! Her explanations were clear and the examples were great and helpful. Great book!
review 2: I have given this book a five star rating on the strength of the first half of the book in which Arnold outlines the concept of microresolutions. Basically, the idea is to change large problem behaviors (wonky eating habits, lack of exercise, wobbly interpersonal skill, messiness) by identifying small behaviors that contribute to the larger pattern and which are easy to change and easy to monitor and which, as they become embedded as habitual behaviors can move one toward those larger behavioral goals. My first microresolution: no food or drink (except water) for twelve hours after the evening meal. Excess weight is a perennial problem for me, but I adopted this microresolution, not with weight loss in mind, but in the hope that, with less gastric discomfort in the night, I would get more rest and start to feel more energetic during the day. Arnold is very big on getting enough sleep as the foundation for tackling any and all self-improvement plan.I skimmed large parts of the second half of the book where she give examples and case histories related to things like: diet, success in the workplace, exercise programs, interpersonal relationships. A lot of that material didn't seem pertinent in terms of where I stand at the moment (although I reserve the right to revisit the book if I decide to work more specifically on one of those areas of concern at a future date.) less
