review 1: This book had potential, but overall it was too emotionally draining for me. I understand the graveness of the tragedy involved, but it was one that was painful for me to get through and I guess I had hoped that it would end better or there would be more of a feeling of "beauty from ashes". There really wasn't a great outcome for anyone in the book. Maybe that's more realistic, but these people just couldn't cope so I was left with a feeling of hopelessness. And that ending... it's like it stopped in the middle of a thought. I am not a fan of those endings and wish books would come with warnings when that's going to happen. You know, "Warning: This book ends in the middle of a thought and you will be left to draw your own conclusions."
review 2: I loved,... more loved, LOVED this book. I bought it for two reasons: 1) I was interested in how the fear of Jewish people and Communism in the 1950s would tie in to Jimmy's disappearance; and 2) I like a good mystery. This did not disappoint. The characters were developed and each one of them spoke to me in a different way. We have all been one of these people - the gal ahead of her time, the shy boy, the girl pining after the boy she loves, the boy loving his best friend's mom. The dark cloud hanging over everyone impacted by Jimmy's disappearance floats throughout the book like a slow-moving thunderstorm, waiting for the right time to produce a tornado. The tornado ends up being an F-5, not because of overt horror but because of the muted knowledge that what happened to Jimmy and those around him could happen to any one of our kids and to us. less
