review 1: I started off loving this book. The writing style kept you interested. Yet as the book went on, the historical inaccuracies and impossibilities were bothering me as a history teacher. I know it is historical fiction, but as a teacher when my students read books they begin to think everything they read is true. Then it becomes a task for me to have to fix the details. I think having the point of view of Tatiana was interesting as she is often not the sister we hear about. She is known for being the most strong minded, and that I enjoyed about the character. The parents seemed to be portrayed as idiots to a fault I am not sure can be completely accurate. Were they incompetent? Many historians would say yes, but the author seemed to exaggerate their incompetence. Tatiana bein... moreg the only survivor is the most far fetched as she died in the basement and her body was identified. Maria and Anastasia or Alexei would be the most likely to write a what if about as their deaths were controversial. I also was not buying the possibility of Tatiana having lovers outside of wedlock. It seemed higher unlikely to me seeing her position in society. All in all I have read so many books about the Romanovs from versus points of view, this was my least favorite.
review 2: Heard this on CD. I loved this book - didn't want it to end. The narrator, an 80+ year old woman, says she's the second daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra and instead of being killed with the rest of the family during the Russian revolution, she survived. She tells the story of their lives before and during the revolution and how she escaped what the world believes was her fate. She's giving this story to her children and grandchildren so they know where they came from. It's wonderful - a fascinating, sometimes exciting, beautifully told story. Highly recommend! less
