review 1: I really enjoyed this book as the journey of the main character was so enthralling. I wanted to find out more each page I turned. I read this novel really fast as I wanted to get to the ending. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending and I fell in love with the concept of angels again. This is really well written as you are with the guardian angel throughout and you see things through their eyes. I would recommend this book to anyone. It has drama, suspense, mysticism and resolution.
review 2: I was looking forward to reading this book but was sadly disappointed and in a way could not wait for it to end. Unlike other readers I thought the beginning of the novel was much stronger than the latter half. I appreciated the idea of guardianship of the young children
... more through difficult times and even the notion that cruel adults have guardians too. I particularly liked the idea of the adult self protecting oneself as a child. I realise it is a limitation of the "journal" genre but I found the single narrative voice rather irritating; the narrator and the "main" character being essentially the same person I thought there was a lost opportunity for a greater interplay between the two - or at least a couple of dual narrative moments rather than just Margot's dialogue and Ruth's sporadic "yep, that happened". Despite one small revelation in the last moments of the novel (or rather a weak conclusion to a subplot) I felt untouched by the adult Margot/Ruth storyline and slightly stomped on by the religious agenda at the end - with the final words showing a total change of tone that felt uncharacteristic of the Angel/Ruth's persona in place of a real conclusion for the main characters. A couple minor points: I appreciate that it was the adult american Ruth telling the story, but it irritated me that she referred to her "pants" when a virtually adult Margot would have called them trousers, especially when she had not long left Ireland. It's a petty point, but it disengaged me. I won't deny the novel made me think, it's not a read I ever care to return to. less

I really enjoyed the story but had a hard time with the basic premise and the timeline.
