review 1: Parkhurst is a very skilled and insightful writer, and this is a great book. It is a mystery of a sort, but the main focus is the relationship between mother and son; the pain of losing a child and a husband; the devastation of discovering that your child might have done something unspeakable, and realizing you don't know him at all. It's also about reconciliation, and self-discovery, and even about the act of writing itself. It will make you laugh, and think, and maybe even cry a little. As an added bonus, the prose is exquisite. Go read it!
review 2: This is a new author and I really enjoyed her style of writing and the plot. It opens with her estranged son, who is a famous and popular lead singer in a rock band, arrested for the murder of his girlfriend. S... morehe sees it as a headline in a newspaper about it as she flies to NYC, as she, herself, is a well known author. The book is an interesting insight into the dynamics of the son/mother relationship after a traumatic event (that happened earlier in their lives), the complications of motherhood, being well known within your genre and what that does to a person and the family around them, and of course the main plot of solving the case of the murdered girlfriend. I enjoyed the author's writing style so much I just ordered her previous book off of Book Swap. less
