review 1: Olivia has lived in her rural Kentucky home all her life, running the local grocery first with her father then with her grandson Will'm. With only minor disturbances caused by Olivia's mentally ill mother, life has been pretty quiet, if not ideal. Olivia is haunted by lost love, the mistakes she made with her daughter, and the night the accident changed everything. Now someone is hunting and killing the wolves that have lived peacefully in the woods around her home since her grandfather's time. This is a quiet, beautiful story of love and loss. All of the characters (even minor ones) are well crafted, but the real beauty is in the writing. I heard an author say that there are three elements in a good novel -- plot, characters and setting. I think that in this case the... more characters and setting drive this book. There is some suspense around who is killing the wolves and why, but Wall's writing just sucked me into rural Kentucky in the 1930s and into the lives of these people. The wolf hunt was just the shell that drew everyone together. The story starts a bit slowly, but as I grew to know and care about Olivia, Will'm, Wing, Junk, Love Alice, and the Reverend I was completely captivated by all of them and their lives. There's enough historical context to call this historical fiction, but the story is really about the people.
review 2: I loved this debut novel set in Depression-era Kentucky. Olivia Harker is doing the best she can to wrangle her insane mother, her soft-hearted grandson and her dying grocery business when, to top it all off, some redneck starts shooting the silver-faced wolves that live in the mountains behind her house. As she tries to find out who's killing these peaceful creatures, a tortured tale starts to emerge from the past. Somehow, in all the cold and hungerand heartbreak and horror, Carolyn Wall also manages to weave an incredibly tender love story into this wonderful book. I couldn’t put it down. less
