review 1: Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I loved the Olivia's, the main character and narrator's, voice and felt invested in the other characters too. I felt that the main storyline, a broken family living in KY just after the turn of the 20th century and their past, was interesting and captivating. However, it felt like the story was slow moving at times and then would hurry and rush through the more significant scenes. It also felt at the end, as a huge mystery was unveiled, like there should have been more clues throughout the story, but most of the book didn't read like a mystery, little parts here and there did, but the majority was more like slice if life story, so the ending all swamped in the big reveal with only tiny follow up on the rest of the story-lines was a... more little weird. Maybe if I reread it I'd catch little clues I missed this time. But I can't complain, it was an entertaining and interesting book. 3.5 stars if I could! If you liked Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe like I did, this book is for you!
review 2: If the last sentence of this book was, "Everything's fine and nothing hurts," it would be some of the truth. And, as an uninformed reader, you would have to finish the book to know if everyone was dead or if things were working out. Three, at least, professional library journals have lauded this debut book and I couldn't agree more. I read it in 24 hours! Other reviewers evoke the ghosts of Harper Lee, Flannery O'Connor and William Faulkner in trying to describe the tone and scope of this compelling novel. And again, I agree. The characters are originals and the good guys are so wise and determined. The bad guys are loathsome and life is hard. Yet, through all of the hardship and dis-array, disappointment and longing, there is a clear shining light and Wall's extraordinary way with words. The reader is bound to the spot, watching Olivia, Will'm, Wing, Love Alice and Junk putting one foot in front of the other. less
