review 1: I had a very hard time with this book. I found the storyline was lost in the main character's almost sexual obsession. I understand that many teen boys have this on their mind at most times, but I don't need to know all about it when reading a book. I home to one day go back and revisit this book and read it completely. I did try, but I review books for my school collection and this was one I could tell quite soon which would not be making it to our shelves.
review 2: As someone who dearly loved Carrie Mesrobian's first book, Sex & Violence, I was looking forward to reading this book a lot. Unfortunately, my expectations were not met. While I think she can definitely get in the head of a teenage boy (the dialogue and the thought process is spot on), I found... more myself asking "what is the point of this book?" for most of my reading. Sean is an older teen about to graduate high school while living in Minnesota. He deals with the absence of his alcoholic father and a mother who is a bit distant from him. He is attracted to a girl about to go to college and smokes pot, drinks and has your typical small town fun. His listless life drives him to sign up for the Armed Forces. Sean's actions are not really explained throughout the book. Why does he keep doing what he does if he is miserable? Many plot points are brought up and never resolved. Sean reacts to certain events with such emotion that are never really justified or explained. The book basically just ends at an illogical point (for me). While I enjoy Mesrobian's writing style and her ability to get into the head of a teenage boy so well, I was left a bit cold by this book. less
