review 1: I enjoyed “The Barefoot Executive: The Ultimate Guide for Being Your Own Boss and Achieving Financial Freedom” by Carrie Wilkerson. It's an inspiring and motivating read that encourages the reader to be their own boss and achieve financial freedom by growing their own business. There are some good lessons here, but mostly it is a book that opens the reader's eyes to possibilities and points them toward greater achievement if they believe and take action on those possibilities. The book is divided into five main parts. The first, The Myth Breakers, contains chapters that focus on ideas such as job security and retirement being fairy tales, and why you must own your own business to truly become financially successful. The second part has three chapters on what Wilkers... moreon calls The Three Big Mistakes. These are chasing someone else's dream, chasing too many rabbits, and chasing dollars. Both of these parts will motivate you to become your own boss and chase your own dreams.Part three, The Methods, provides chapters that provide ideas on the mindset and resources needed to create your own business to pursue. These include the mindset of success, taking massive action, masterminding, finding a mentor, and doing your research. The fourth part, The Models, contains different business models for you to choose from to create your business. These are service based, expertise based, knowledge based, good based, referral based, and finally multiple streams of income once you have at least one firmly planted. The final and fifth part of the book, The Marketplace, contains five chapters on finding a place to sell what you decide to sell as your business. These are who wants what you have, ideas to income, where will they find you, building your audience, and where will you find them.Again, the book is very motivating and inspiring. The author also included links to short on-line videos to reinforce some of her messages. (The ones I watched were the same message as in the book, but you get to see her live telling it.)The book doesn't contain the nitty gritty down in the trenches steps a person will have to take to start a business and build it to a success. But rather, gives a broad overview of the possibilities and provides encouragement and guidance as to what general directions a person may take, and things to include along the way.Again, I enjoyed the book and feel Wilkerson shared some good advice for the would be self-employed business owner to think about and act upon. If you've been thinking of starting out on your own to pursue your dreams, The Barefoot Executive just might give you the shot of motivation you need to get started.
review 2: The Barefoot Executive isn't a how-to book that takes you step-by-step through how to start your own business. Instead, it is a book that motivates and encourages your dreams. You'll discover how to take skills you already have, determine what business model you're interested in, and how to be successful in the marketplace. Even in crowded markets you can be successful because you are unique and offer your own unique perspective. You can provide the answers to the questions people are asking. Wilkerson doesn't sugar-coat anything. She doesn't tell you it's going to be easy or that it will happen overnight. She does, however, inspire with her success and the success of others whose stories you'll find featured in the numerous case studies throughout the book. She has an engaging conversational style that makes readers move swiftly through the book. She asks questions that demand answers and gets you thinking about what skills you have that can create an income stream. She speaks of the importance of mentors and mastermind groups, because surrounding yourself with the right kind of people can make a difference. As a wife and mother, Wilkerson had a decision to make about her future. She opted to live life on her terms. The Barefoot Executive can help you do the same. less

Good if you want a pep talk. A lot of self promotion. Lacking in useful tools.
