review 1: I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the sequels. The cover (and title) looks a little vampirish but it isn't (which is a nice change). They're immortal more in the way of Highlander, only...I think there can be more than one ;PI thought the romance was well paced to be believable, and the hurdles in both the romance and her own character development were interesting and significant.
review 2: I've read Cate Tiernan's work before- I devoured her Balefire series in little more than a day, and I can't pass by a certain library shelf without looking longingly at the Sweep series. Tiernan manages to bring out the best in all her characters, working and weaving witty words and phrases that, by the end of the book, leaves your head spinning and your... more stomach sore from laughing. Our stubborn as a mule heroine Nastasya's humor is at least 45% snark and the rest is most definitely pure, concentrated sass, and it carries throughout the book wonderfully. Which manages beautifully to make both you tear up and then, a line later, cry out in rage when things inevitably start to go wrong in all the right ways. The whole thing floats by in a kind of dream like state- one moment you're struggling through chapter one, and then, bam! Your mind is suddenly reading the last line and you're having trouble recalling seeing a page number past 104. "Immortal Beloved" is a definite recommendation from me to those who adore a first person perspective, laughing until your belly hurts; and groaning in defeat when Tiernan has managed to write you into falling in love with yet another brilliant and darkly romantic work. less
