review 1: I read this, just now, with the title "Circle of Stones". Like everything else Fisher writes, it's fascinating! One of the things I really appreciate about this author is her ability to write flawed and even unlikeable characters who are nevertheless sympathetic. Such a one is Zac, the teenage assistant to a brilliant architect in 18th-century Bath. In modern-day Bath, another teenager struggles with a past that is controlling her. And, in the far distant past, a leprous druid king discovers healing waters. Is that king, Bladud, really pursuing Sulis, the modern teen? Did he really kill her friend? What is Sulis hiding - even from herself? And does the relationship between the teens in the 18th century really echo that of Sulis and Josh in the 21st? These are questions read... moreers must answer for themselves, as three stories twist around each other. I found the modern story the most compelling, initially, but ended up equally gripped by the tale of Sylvie and Zac in the 18th century. And Jonathan Forrest, the mad, brilliant, and good-hearted architect, is also a compelling character with his own echoes. Another well-crafted tale with considerable emotional resonance and some beautiful descriptions. I did not love it quite as much as "Corbenic" and "Dakrhenge", but I admired it a lot and was happy to have read it.
review 2: Truthfully, I wasn't expecting to make it all through this novel. I've read several books by Catherine Fisher in the past, but I never really liked them, and I gave up part-way through Incarceron. So imagine my surprise when I blew through Circle of Stones, finishing it in less than a day! Though I don't think I LOVED it, I enjoyed it. The story was well-paced and the alternate view-points and times really added to the story as a whole. Would recommend. less
