review 1: Wow! A lot happens in this book, but not much is explained. There is a big cast of characters here and though not all of them are likable, all are interesting in unexpected ways. Catherine Fisher really loves her action and there is no shortage of it here. Even though there is a lot of fantasy and Sci-Fi elements to the story, it mainly reads like an action thriller. Recommended to anyone who wants a quick actiony read, but doesn't mind not having all facts.
review 2: This is a perfectly serviceable middle school fantasy story. I read it over 2 days. A girl comes back from the future to destroy a mirror, while another character named Jake plans to confront the man who murdered his father. There are fairy-type creatures in the woods who live outside of time a
... morend a changeling Gideon. There's a lot of running around. I liked this author's "Incarceron" series more. I'm not sure I care enough to buy the sequel or give it to my kids, except I have a coupon from the book store that I could use. Common sense media gave this 4 stars for age 12 and up. I can't get quite that excited about it, but it's fine for a kid's summer fantasy read, if there's nothing better in the house. less

The novel is dark just like the volcanic glass obsidian.
