review 1: I initially read this book a couple of years ago when it won the Green Carnation Prize. Very recently I have had the urge to re-read a few past favourites of mine. The Green Carnation Prize is a prize for the best gay fiction ( I think this is just limited to UK titles). In my opinion this is the best book that I have read to date from past winners. Anyhow 'Proof Of Love' is a deep and satisfying read that will remain in my memory for a long time. Spencer is not your typical gay man that you find frequents some recent contemporary gay fiction. At the beginning of the story he is a very nervous and shy man. By the mid/end of the story he blossoms into a happy and positive gay man confident in himself. Actually at this point of the story I wish the story had conclude... mored as what follows is not a happy ending. Such was my love for Spencer, as a character, that I did hope that his future outlook would be good, which indeed was not the case. The parts of the book which I particularly enjoyed were the scenes between Spencer and Alice. There is not much fiction published that is brave enough to explore friendship between a child and adult. Although I have never been to the Lake District I feel the author described it so well I could smell and feel the countryside. I was shocked by the brutality of farming life however I suppose this is reality. It is an extremely moving book partly because the characters are very realistic, they do not appear just like fictional characters on paper. I cannot describe in words how much I loved and enjoyed this book. In my eyes it is a masterpiece. I will read more books by this author however I am unsure whether it will get any better than this.
review 2: This book sang to me. Growing up in rural Cumbria, the discriptions of the countryside, the landscape and the people just sang to a core of me that I didn't know I had. I always felt such an outsider and this book perfectly encapsulates the feeling of outsideness in a rural community. The pace of the book completely represents the weather, starts off slow and steamy and then picks up pace as the weather changes. Absolutely beautiful. less
