review 1: What if everyone in your life believed that you were dead? We all think about being "trapped on a desert island" but what about the reality of it? The premise of this novel fascinated me and although I would have written the middle of the story a bit differently, I did find some satisfaction in the ending. Starting over with a clean slate can be more difficult and frustrating- it's not just an easy do-over - and the experience of coming back from the dead after everyone else has moved on without you can be lonely. The author does a pretty good job of conveying those feelings.
review 2: Starts out very strong - a story about a young woman who loses her mother, then takes the trip to Africa that her mother always wanted to take but never did. Then an earthqu
... moreake strikes and the woman is stranded in Africa for six months, with no way to communicate back to the people in her life that she is still alive. When she finally returns, she discovers that they all believed her to be dead and the world had moved on, forcing her to reassess everything about the life she had been leading. What a fantastic concept! But it then devolves into standard, predictable chick lit, with a strange investigative mystery taking over momentarily, and inexplicably. I wish the author had stayed on course with the concept, it was such a rich area. It felt like the author was more drawn to that aspect also, as the latter half chick lit part of the book felt rushed and thin comparatively. less
