review 1: Loved it. This was a Kindle free download. There are some really wonderful books offered free for the Kindle. What a wonderful gift to the public. I'm a senior citizen and the cost of books today has been daunting. My Kindle was a gift from my children and has proved to be a wonderful source of enjoyment. Between the library and these free books a whole new world has become available. I don't write reviews but I will always rate what I read with a brief sentence. I am grateful to some of my Good Reads friends for their suggestions and reviews. I get great ideas from them. Especially Delee.
review 2: This novel is about two very different women and the secrets they hold close to themselves. Stella Nightingale is a young woman who left home as a teena
... moreger and through luck and determination, is making something of her life. Alice Montclair Whittington is a wealthy grande dame who has managed to run off a series of caregivers with her dry humor and penchant for wicked comments. The two strike up a friendship as they learn more about one another during the course of Stella's employment. As they learn more about one another, we are learning more as well, mainly through well-placed flashbacks and direct conversations. Both women have secrets about themselves that they don't trust others with. Eventually, of course, those secrets are revealed, if not in their entirety, then enough that the missing pieces can be easily discerned. My only complaint about this story is that the back cover blurb makes a point of raising the question of why the other caregivers never go down to the basement. Yet the question is not answered and we aren't given any clues as to why this is so or what the reasons may be. It seems like the author intended this to be a plot point of some sort, but the story ended up going in another direction and leaves us wondering instead. All in all, this is an excellent story. less
