review 1: This book started out great with a proposal at the top of the Eiffel tower, however after the prologue it really started to go down hill.It took me ages to read this book, and several times I though about giving up on it, however I finish ploughed through it and got to the end.I found the Katy and Michael story to be lovely, and they were very lovable characters, however, I felt that there were way to may characters in this book.Along with the may characters, there were many subplots, done if which came to a very abrupt stop at the end of the book. I nearly had a headache trying to figure out how all the characters were related and which story was which.I was really looking forward to reading this book, and it was a huge disappointment because it rally could have been so ... moremuch better. Saying that, I have read worse book, but this of not a story that I'll remember in a few months time, which is a pity because it has the makings of a great story, but it just had too many stories in it, which made it hard to follow.
review 2: Following a romantic proposal at the top of the Eiffel Tower, the bride and groom to-be return home to Ireland with their good news. But while their families and friends are excited about the forthcoming nuptials, each also has their own life to worry about. The books follows a large cast of characters in the run up to the wedding and describes their tragedies, comedies and hopes for happiness. This couldn’t strictly be described as Chick Lit as the characters are from a wider age range than those usually found in novels with pink sparkly covers. Though there are new relationships here there are also second chances, long marriages and children of different ages dealing with the fallout from things going wrong. There’s the usual aspirational tone found in women’s novels of this kind (beautiful kitchens, designer wardrobes, high-flying careers) and an assortment of men who are all at some stage useless in their own way (most of whom come good in the end). There’s a bigger cast of characters than in most novels of this kind, but it doesn’t seem overly complicated and it reflects the way our families and society are changing.Though the book can’t be said to be ground breaking, it’s absorbing while you’re reading it. The characters seem like real people, you recognise and identify with their problems, and want the best for those you like. It Started With Paris is a satisfying, diverting read which acts as a bit of a comfort blanket. It will be enjoyed by those who have read any of Cathy Kelly’s previous works, and would be a good place to start for anyone new to this author. less
