review 1: First of all, I will start and say that the book is ok, it really is. And for people who want to relax and to spend some of their free time in reading, it is a fair book. There are some beautiful quotes and the stories of the women are interesting. And in other circumstances I would have probably given it 3.5, or even 4, but then something happened. I started reading the book and I had a familiar feeling, and after 30 pages I realized that I have read this book before, few years back, but I completely forgot. This has never happened with a book before. I literally had a flashback and memories that I have read it, but I remembered very little, it was as if I never read it. I never jump through a book, I always read them thoroughly, especially when they have interesting stor... moreies (such as this one), but still the fact is that this book is completely forgettable. You like the book while you are reading it, but then, you just simply forget it. I didn't even remembered the title, it was like a completely new book for me, but when I started reading I realized I recognized Star and the other characters, but I didn't remember anything about the stories. So actually, this was a re-read, but it was like a first time. That is why I am giving it 2 stars. A book is supposed to leave a trace, something that will shake you, some memory or a feeling. A book is not supposed to be forgotten like it was never read. At least, that is my philosophy when it comes to book, and I don't like when books are forgettable. But is is not a bad book either.
review 2: Cathy Kelly's novel 'once in a lifetime' is true to it's title- it is a once in a life time novel!Beautifully written, Kelly tackles the subjects of alcoholism, child abuse and bereavement with heart-breaking sincerity. The book also explores the dynamics of the mother and daughter relationship.I like Kelly's entanglement of the characters. They are all connected by Star Bluestone ( I wish this lady was real!!) and Kenny's Department Store. I think the book is a masterpiece for women's literature because the three main characters: Ingrid, Natalie and Charlie are different ages and at different momentous points in their lives. Therefore I feel this book appeals to women readers of every age. less
