review 1: I picked this up on a whim at the library when I was looking for something by Wally Lamb, and was captivated by the summary on the jacket. As other reviewers have commented the idea behind the plot is captivating: the central character goes through bariatric surgery after experiencing a heart attack at the age of 32 and, two years and 170 lbs. later, finds herself finally confronting the demons that got her to that point in the first place. The characters and the story have so much potential.But...There are certain characters who just seem a bit too far outside the realm of believability. It's fiction, I get that, but I still want to believe that these people could exist... and I would have felt that way if some of the eccentricities had been dialed down just a tad. I'm no... moret even referring to Stevie's mother -- I thought her characterization was actually rather well-written -- but the cousins, some of the coworkers, Jake... a bit too out there and either overly dramatic or overly angelic to seem legit. And, as others have noted, there are some major crimes against grammar in this book. I lost count of the number of times the phrase "me and so-and-so did..." appeared. Perhaps the author was trying to write in Stevie's voice, but with her description of Stevie's wonderful grades it seems that she would have been well-acquainted with proper usage. These aspects detracted from the entirety, but the author's way of connecting the two time-frames was captivating and the pace was good. It held my attention and I unintentionally ended up plowing through the 450 pages in a little more than a day. If you can overlook some of the overwrought characters and the word crimes, it's a pleasant read.
review 2: Is it okay to give a review before finishing the book? I am ready to throw in the towel on this one and feel like I've wasted too much time on a book I really dislike. How can it be that all the characters talk like Foghorn Leghorn? I can see one who might repeat what they say for emphasis, but all? I can't take it anymore!Like the other reviews, I agree that the characters are over the top good or evil. The evil ones are so bad that I do not want to read another word about them. They make my skin crawl and leave me in a bad mood. The good are on my other shoulder, telling me to finish the damn book. Both are playing out the most unrealistic scenarios. If it were a movie, it would be slapstick. I never cared for slapstick.Other books are on my queue and beckoning me to return this book to the library and pick up the one I have on hold. Does anyone want to send me a quick note about how it ends so I can move on? less
