review 1: I felt that this book was very original and about a topic that is almost never written about. I had no idea that I even had any interest in knowing anything about the history of Niagara Falls, but I ended up enjoying what I learned. I felt that the main character was engaging enough, but overall I felt that the pace of this story was just too slow for me! I read this book because I loved her other book, 'The Painted Girls.'
review 2: This book was like sitting down to a gourmet meal: rich and fulfilling. Although the book is primarily full of tragedy, there is a heartwarming aspect that I feel keeps it well balanced. The descriptions of the falls and the surroundings were excellent; at some points in the book I could actually hear the falls roaring in my ea
... morers and feel the mist on my skin. While the ending was a bit predictable, a small surprise was in store that made it seem much better. I am thankful that the author at the end of the book discusses some of the real issues with Niagara Falls during that time period, which is what this book is loosely based on. Fantastic book overall. less
