review 1: These books just keep getting better. Coyote is back and this time in the flesh. The really interesting part is that Joanne gets to see him with all of the human frailty. She sees that while he is her teacher, in many ways she has outstripped him in power. While he was gone, she has in many ways outgrown him. His reaction to this is petty and childish and Joanne is pretty tolerant and magnanimous about the whole thing. She actually feels like she's letting him down because she isn't afraid to fight and doesn't deal with a soul eating demon and a meddlesome reporter with kid gloves. Did anybody else want to smack her? And him?Anyway, I thought the bluster contest between Cyrano and Morrison was a riot and I love how Gary and Billy just sit back and smirk over the wh... moreole thing. It was also fun (although a little mind-blowingly convenient) for Joanne's childhood nemesis to show up in the middle of the case to allow for the venting of that bit of drama. The best, though, is that now, even when we get drug to the dead zone, we're at least there fighting with a monster instead of wandering around talking to ourselves.....
review 2: Aw, c'mon. On the one hand, good Wendigo story. On the other hand, where the prior books fused all kinds of different mythologies in an interesting way, this one is full on wannabe Indian, to the point that I think I'd be embarrassed if any Native Americans were reading over my shoulder. "My spirit guide" this and "my spirit animal that"...and then...and then...teenage high school rivalries surface?? WTF?? less
