review 1: Raven Calls, while a reasonably good story, wasn't as engaging as the previous novels in the Walker Papers series. Jo is in Ireland this time, and is, once again, battling inner demons while fighting the bad guy of the week. We get a bit more insight into her mother's family as well as some new information on her mother. The novel pulls in a lot more mythology than the previous books. I think the short fall here is that Jo is without the cast of supporting characters that really made the previous books work. I hope we get a return to home in the next novel.
review 2: Raven Calls was the first book in the series that really cannot be read on its own, moving straight out of the end of the previous book (only a day or two later) and covers only three days fro
... morem first page to the last.In the last book, Jo was bitten by a werewolf in service to the evil 'Master' who is the villain behind everything that had happened up until now. Facing the infection, she quit her job and headed off to Ireland in search of her dead mother's shade, who is being transformed into a Banshee. This book starts with her landing in Ireland, met by her friend Gary (who'd been given the head's up by Morrison, the police captain who was her boss before she quit, and now her romantic interest). They head off to find their way to her mother's ghost.Because this is basic the second half of the story that started in the previous book, this was difficult to get into, since it's been a while since I read the previous book. Joanne's cousin is dragged in as they travel to the Irish underworld, travel through time, meet various Irish gods/sidhe, fight the Morrigan and the banshee queen, confront the Master, and deal with the werewolf bite/infection. The speed that all of this comes at the reader made it a little confusing at times. And the end scene means that no sooner has Joanne dealt with her mommy issues, she needs to now go and deal with her daddy issues in the next (penultimate) book. The confusion and heavy dependance on having recently read the previous book knocks the score down a little for me. I can't really say I liked the book, but I do appreciate the way that it brings the overarcing plot line forward. It's rather like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where a season starts out with stories that pretty much stand alone, but by the end of the season you're into the battle with the big bad that turned out to be directing everything, now that you look back at it. less
