review 1: As far as I'm concerned, and I read the whole Sookie Stackhouse series, this short story could have stayed unpublished. I did notice a small nod to it in one of the books that came after, but really it was unnecessary. The characterization of Sookie just didn't ring true to me--or maybe that's more of my problem with how she changed as a character from the first 4 or so books. Some of the other stories I just couldn't get into."Gray" was great, love Patricia Briggs."Squatter's Rights" was just creepy and the ending was a little....unsatisfactory...but also intriguing."The Strength Inside" was ok. Fairly interesting characters.I enjoyed "Woolsley's Kitchen Nightmare", probably in part because I really like stories where someone comes in and fixes all the problems a place ... moreis having. And very much like Kitchen Nightmares on TV."Through This House", the Toby Daye story, was the reason I picked this collection up. I had read the Sookie story ages ago, but at the time I hadn't read any of the Toby Daye books so I didn't read this story then. I'm glad that I did. It fits into the world of the novels, while not being totally necessary for you to understand any plot points in the books if you missed reading this short story."Rick the Brave" was interesting and left me wondering if there were more novels where that came from. (p.s. There are.)I'm checking out the Spellcrackers books based on "Full Scale Demolition". Seems like an interesting world."It's all in the rendering" had a very quick and somewhat mystifying conclusion that kind of defeated the purpose of introducing all the characters in the story to us. It was kind of like the entire purpose of the short story was just to introduce the characters."The Brightest Day" made me laugh. I'd be happy to read a series based on that character. I also enjoyed that there was no romance in that story--not even a mention of whether the character was single or not. It's nice when a female character can go out and have a day at work without meeting some incredible hottie and getting all involved.
review 2: This was the only "copy" of the book I could find, it's an audio version. This is the first time I've attempted to listen to a book, and I don't care for it. Since I'm not actively reading the book, I feel as if I should be doing something else while listening, and then I lose my attention for the book, because I'm cleaning, etc. I will give it a try for a few more stories, maybe, but I might give up on it for now until I can find the actual book.I found a way that worked for the most part, but I'd still rather actually read the book then just listen. I ended up finishing the book. The stories were okay, some better than others though. I listened to them all except The Path by S. J Rozan, that one was beyond annoying, and I quickly skipped past it. I do not believe that I've read any books by anyone other than Charleine Harris and Heather Graham (fromthis anthology), so I will give most of them a try with one of their full length novels - assuming I can actually read them! The 2 narrators, Amanda Ronconi and MacLeod Andrews were amazing! less
