At 15 years old, Keeva Tee attends Monarch Camp, hoping to finally imprint with her intended partner only to find out that she’s an Anomaly, someone who is unable to imprint. She meets other Anomalies, somehow survives camp, and returns to her home in the Ocean Community. However, some shit happens and Keeva joins the rebellion against the global governance. Not too long after that, she is asked to lead a group of rebels, despite being the newest member of the rebellion. So if I had to describe Anomalies in a single sentence, it would be the mashup of several aspects of Divergent and The Hunger Games in a single book.
This is my very first time listening to an audiobook and it was a rather good experience. It may not be as good as the anime drama CDs I usually listen to but the narrator was very clear and engaging. I found myself wanting to continue to listen to the audiobook even though I lost interest in several parts of the story (I guess that’s the joy of audiobooks, eh? Being able to continue with the book even if it bores you out).
I really enjoyed the world Anomalies is set in. There was a Technology War that almost ended the world (because technology is all the rage these days) but it also explores the idea of a singular government ruling the entire world (it’s actually just like three continents though) and whether it is truly possible for us to achieve world peace. It is a unique world that was described in great detail, though sometimes it bordered on sounding like a history textbook. But unlike history textbooks, the information was broken into bits and pieces so it was easy for me to absorb them.
However, it was hard for me to catch the names of every character in the book. Not because the narrator wasn’t clear in her pronunciation of the names, but rather because there were simply too many. The moment I’ve gotten ‘acquainted’ with some of them, they’re gone, and when their names are mentioned again after a long absence, it takes me awhile to recall who they are.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, which was rather disappointing because I had the impression that this was a standalone novel. But I was also relieved that the entire rebellion wouldn’t be simplified and crammed into the last 25% of the book. I just hope that there will be a second book.
