review 1: To have loved and lost it only to find love again; in someone else is the main theme of this novella by the master of characterizations, Charles Dickens. While I read this book I had to constantly remind myself that it wasn’t a work of Thomas Hardy. I am always happy to read Victorian love stories as they take such a round-about way of approaching the subject. This short story is generally grouped with Dickens’ Christmas stories but I have never considered it so and that this categorization is a fallacy; probably caused by a lack of a better one. Of one thing you can be sure…. It is a love story to remember. Although the story is short, it shines as brightly as his novels. I recommend it to everyone.

... moreickens.Managed to read this one quite quickly as it was a short story. It was also faster paced in the telling than Barnaby Rudge was which made it an altogether better tale. I can't decide if the story is lame or quite beautiful. Hmmm, I think the unselfish sacrifices of the sisters, one in particular, that the entire tale centres upon, is the beautiful part, the over dramatisation of it, is the lame part, but then perhaps the two go hand in hand....its essentially a love story, the one sister is promised to a chap who is clearly loved by/more suited to the other sister and so the one he is promised to disappears. less

I'm not buying that ending, Chuck, but you being you, I enjoyed myself, as usual.

A charming tale of love lost and found - the epitome of Victoriana.

The least popular of Dickens' Christmas books, and justifiably so.
