review 1: I'm a big Charles Lenox fan, but I thought this short story was lacking. I understand it was a short story and could not have been as along or as detailed as a full-length novel, but still this story seemed unfinished and unpolished. It was the beginning of an idea and needed more work to make it work better. It was a quick visit during a busy work-day rather than a nice, long friendly afternoon off. The idea was good, and the mystery was intriguing, but I was expected better. I was also disappointed that half of of the ebook I downloaded was a preview of the next book in the series. That was deceptive and frankly makes me question purchasing further novellas/short stories by the author (I know that was probably the publisher's decision, but still it feels as of the ... morestory was written as a stop-gap teaser until the next-in-series book was available.)
review 2: This was a quick little mystery that got right to the point and clipped along quickly to the end. Shorter than I expected actually since it ends at the 44% mark of my Kindle.Charles Lenox has been called in by a constable to look into the murder of a man in the Seven Dials district of London. Phil Jigg was a quiet man who had few friends, but was not unliked where he lived and worked. Lenox first tries to get to know the man hoping there is something there that will give him the solution to the crime. His investigating leads him into danger and a surprising solution. As usual, I enjoy the description of the setting and following along with Lenox's thoughts as he tracks down the killer. This one moved along quickly and got right to the point with the clues and solution since it was such a short story. It did feel a bit rushed and I would have liked to have seen it a bit more fleshed out particularly since things seemed left a bit in the air when it came to the dangerous threat by one of the suspects. All in all, it was satisfying and I look forward to what comes next with the novel-lengths mysteries that are still ahead in the series. less
