review 1: I am generally a big fan of Stross in general and the Laundry Files in specific and while I enjoyed this book, it has two major issues.First, the characters Bob works with, Persephone and Johnny, are not well-developed enough. They end up feeling like a rougher outline, and their interactions with each other and especially with Bob are awkward, like they were written in a hurry and not revised.Second, while I enjoy immensely Stross's discussions of how completely evil American evangelicals are, I think he does a much better job writing about what Bob and Mo think about how weird they are rather than what it's like to be in their midst. His depiction of the horrors of the cult infiltrating law enforcement and various government agencies do not adequately describe how much... more collateral support people who present as megachurch devotees would get from coworkers and colleagues - evangelical christianity is often treated as normative in the US, and going on about your devotion to Jesus goes quite a ways in many circles. I think he touched on this but didn't develop it as well as the story needed.
review 2: Book four of her Laundry series started strong, but the writing seemed to weaken just as the plot was thickening, almost as if it simply was becoming routine, which seems sad. On the other hand, I started stumbling about and becoming rather picky once Stross had characters meeting at Colfax and 14th in Denver. All right, so I've lived in England since 2000. However, prior to that, I spent years in Colorado, including Denver and its environs. There isn't a Colfax and 14th. 14th runs parallel to Colfax and is one block south of Colfax. If you're setting part of your book in a city you don't know, do check out basics. I know, I know, I'm being picky. However, I found that error rather disconcerting and, after that, I was poised to find additional ones. less

God Game Rainbow. I giggled myself through the end, I must have looked hilarious.

Enjoyable, but I got the sense that the author was rushing to get it over with.

3.5. Fun. I bet he can write these in his sleep between his "bigger" books.
