review 1: This is a good story. And after all, what is more important? I recommend this book if you like anything by Nicholas Sparks. It has that quality about it. The Charles Todd writing team is superb in every story they accomplish. This one doesn't have the suspense and the "bite" of the Ian Rutledge series but who cares? The historical setting and the sweet love story set around the holidays makes it a worthy read.
review 2: The book was a slow go in the middle but I liked the end. It is not a sappy holiday read. in fact it has little to do with any holiday. I like the fact that it is not about a withy washy woman trying to decide between two men but rather a story about how war changes everyone's story in an instant. Tough life decisions must be made and nothing i... mores a given anymore. I would say this book leans toward the historical fiction side. It would be interesting to talk about in a group, what were women's roles in 1914? What were expected of woman in war time? What does duty mean to each one of the characters? What does duty mean to us today? less
