review 1: Book One of the Sanctuary Series I opened this book expecting a different type of story. Especially being labeled as a shifter romance. I was surprised with all the twists and turns that kept me wanting more after each chapter. I do wish there was a bit more action, especially with all the twists that the author takes you on, I was expecting more over the top action to follow along with it. Since it is described as a shifter romance, I think it could have used a bit more romance, but since I normally don't read a lot of romance, I'm not really complaining. The characters were easy to have strong feelings for, both hate and love. It's a roller coaster of emotions that will take you with the characters to a whole new land. Just the very concept of society being cut from corr... moreesponding with one another is scary and intriguing. It really got me thinking about how it would be in today's time. The ending left a lot of things open, with a huge cliff hanger. I wasn't sure there was to be a second book, and this left me quite frustrated, but considering the huge cliff hanger I was pretty confident the author had the intentions of writing a sequel. I'm anxious to read the second book, so keep a look out for my future review of River's Remorse.I'm happy to give this book 5/5!
review 2: I stumbled upon "River's Recruit" from Bookbub.com. This book was so awesome it is hard to imagine that it was free. So, what is so wonderful about this read? The story is so unique and not the typical were read although it is loosely based on the were lore. Additionally, it gives the reader insight into a closed community without the desire for modern conveniences, medical practices or laws. This community has their own rules and they are as harsh as they come.River's mother paid the ultimate price for a crime against their community and while She pretends she is okay with the taking of her mother's life, she is barely hanging on and is fearful of her future. She fear a she will be treated as a whore. Fortunately, she is taken in by the very man who doled out her mother's punishment. She is a servant and must adhere to the regulations of her new master's home. Then, she learns that upon the binding of herself and her wolf, her master wants her to mate with Eli, someone she does not care for at all. What will she do?Meant, while in Afghanistan, Jonathan McKnight is attacked along with another soldier and his twin brother, the Chaplain, Frankie. When he awakens from the explosion in the hospital he discovers that not only has he lost his hand but his beloved brother as well. After the funeral, it is clear that Jonathan needs to get away. During his camping trip, he stumbles upon the hidden community that River is apart of and if he is going to survive, he will need to agree to be River's recruit. As Jonathan attempts to learn the rules as well as life in this foreign community, he struggles with his growing attraction to River. As they attempt to maneuver in a society that crops off fingers at a drop of a hat, the society has a greater connection to Jonathan than even he knows. The question is whether or not this secret will cause his demise. This read was so interesting and intriguing that I gobbled down the pages in no time. I will be honest and say that the first 2/3's of this book flew by for me and kept me on the edge of my seat. Then, in the last 10% of the book things slowed down to a crawl and it felt as u the author was trying to slow down or fill up pages rather than get to the meat of it. While I understand what the author was attempting to do, it didn't work for me. However, it proved to be just a minor annoyance in the end.If you like werewolf lore as well as unique plot, definitely put "River's Recruit" on your 'to read' list. I will definitely move on to read the next book in this series because I am enchanted with the storyline. less
